Moving Time

As we grow nearer to the end of
the month we still have yet to
figure out where we are going next.
Often as we are standing in
someone's apartment we look
at one another with those secret eyes...
"are they joking?".
Well...there are still three days left...

And in that time, some pictures of our
current home and neighborhood...
an ode of sorts.

Whereabouts and Whatabouts...

Whereabouts...

•Still in New York
•Fashion designer's loft, building Geodes
•Chelsea boutique, hanging runway backdrops
•Shooting my first runway show
•A lot more along those lines

Whatabouts...

Two weeks ago when I was supposed to start my internship at Franklin Furnace I was instead recommended (by the director of the Furnace) to help out a passed Franklin Furnace employee/current fashion designer with an upcoming show. The designer, Alice Wu along with Moriah Carlson, are known as feRaL chiLde. The two weeks were busy and really fun. They were super great to work with and I learned a lot about what it is like to organize a fashion show while getting to see the behind the scenes of running an independent clothing line. I have to say it's a lot of work but seems like it would be really rewarding. If only I hadn't dropped that "fashion construction" class. Alice and Moriah liked me so much there is talk of bringing me in to help with some future projects.

This week I hope to start my internship at Franklin Furnace and finally meet the wonderful people there who have been so nice and helpful to me without even meeting me in person.

Check back soon for pictures and updates about my new Green Rider and the adventures we are soon to go on.

For now enjoy some photos.

The Subway (and other news)

I have been thinking about some of my favorite things about NY and realized that most of them have to do with the Subway. I also realized that this might change after my 45 min. ride into school every day gets a bit routine. So before that happens....the things I love about the NY subway include:

- the announcer's tough Brooklyn accent
- seeing the graffiti in the dark tunnels when the train slows down
- passing other trains, crammed with people, no one ever looks
- my metrocard
- the way it shakes my bed as I fall to sleep

Other than riding the subways, I have mostly remained on vacation, whereas Brendan is in the thick of things as we speak. He's been doing some work for a fashion designer who has her show tonight (my first fashion show in NY...what-to-wear...oh my). I just got off the phone with him and I think he's already talking faster. I guess that's what money does.

I however have been getting to know our neighborhood, Victorian Flatbush (any gardeners/farmers check out the video "my empire of dirt" on that link). In addition to big victorian houses we also live close to so much yummy food (both fried and organic), multiple farmers markets, a massive park with botanical gardens, zoo, and paddle boats, no starbucks (that I've seen), and cute local hangouts (where we've found anchor archive zines!)The house is great as well and comes fully equipped with a lovely roommate Alex, and a cat, Sammo.

There is a feeling of having been here much longer than we have (in a good way), but every time I'm feeling settled, I think of all the things I want to see and do here and I realize that there won't be much settling to do here...we'll leave that for the winter months of our return! (we miss you all...)

Coney Island

Today's trip....a visit to our local beach....Coney Island.

Highlights included:

- greasy tacos not made by El Paso
- Screaming on the WonderWheel (yes it is a ferris wheel)
- swimming in our skivies (with our mouths closed)
- candy apples and soft serve ice-cream (brendan has successfully overcome his fear of lactose).
- the super short subway ride home to our lovely new apartment in our lovely new neighborhood.

Central Park Dancers

Today we spent the afternoon wandering and picnicking in Central Park. There is this Rollerskate/Rollerblade area where DJs play music and people dance around like it's 1972. There was some really great stuff to watch like this really buff guy in huge raver pants balancing a water bottle on his head and doing these slow motion dance moves and just some spectacular old school rollerskating. The best thing by far though was.....
